Of course, a lot of people, even those who think they know quite a bit about the database administration field, misunderstand what it is that database administrators do and all of the many career possibilities that await them. Database administrators create and/or maintain databases of information, but who they happen to do this for can vary significantly from one job to the next. Some database administrators, for instance, might work for large corporations, while others work for small business or even for not for profit organizations. Others are either contract employees or are self employed and do all of their marketing themselves.

Obviously, there are many different career capacities in which you can choose to work. As such, there are many different ways to enter into the field. The way in which you will need to enter will depend upon the job that you wish to have. That is why it is so very important that you spend some time, well before you embark on your career path, researching the field and your career options and figuring out exactly what it is that you wish to do in database administration. Once you know this, it becomes easy to tailor your education and/or other learning experiences to meet your career goals.

For many people, a simple associate's degree is all that it takes to get started in the field and to ultimately succeed. Associate's degrees can often be earned in as little as two years, usually from an inexpensive community college or online school, and they usually afford graduates entry level positions in the field. These entry level positions, however, are nothing to be frowned upon. They are excellent ways to get started and to begin working one's way up the success ladder. Of course, you can start at a higher rung and thus have an easier time of it if you so choose.

The easiest way to start at this "higher rung" is to simply pursue a higher level of education. Most successful professionals in the field have at least a bachelor's level degree, even if they came to that after they had already been working in the field in some capacity. Bachelor's degrees are earned in around four years, on average, or two if an acceptable associate's degree is earned previously. They automatically start most people out with a higher salary range and a higher level position right from the start.

Most positions in the field can be earned with only a bachelor's degree. However, some people wish to make themselves invaluable, and they do so by choosing to get a master's level degree or even a PhD. These advanced level degrees can take a while to earn and they usually have extensive pre-requisites. However, they can truly be a shortcut to years of hard work and proving yourself in the field. Remember, though, that there is no "right" or "wrong" way to reach success; it is really just about finding what works for you and for your own personal and career goals.
