Corporate Database Administrators:

The vast majority of database administrators in the state of Utah work for large corporations. They usually work as part of a team at these large companies, though in some cases, a person may be the sole administrator responsible for all aspects of the job. Since these professionals are employed by large corporations, they tend to enjoy very lucrative salaries, excellent benefits, and great job security, something that is quite difficult to come by in today's troubled economic times.

In order to work as a corporate database administrator, you generally need to have at least a bachelor's degree in database administration or in a related area, such as computer science, computer information systems, information technology, or another area. In some cases, associate's degrees alone, usually when coupled with a great amount of experience in the field, will be acceptable as well. Many people also receive specialized certifications as supplements to their education in order to allow them to work in a specific area of the field while on the job. Your daily tasks will depend heavily upon your role in the database administration team.

Small Business Database Administrators:

Not every database administrator can or will want to work for these large corporations as described above. Many prefer a smaller, calmer atmosphere, which is why they choose to be the database administrators for small businesses. These individuals may be hired to work with the company and only with that company full time. Or, alternately, they may be "on call" for the small business and usually several other small businesses in the area, coming to help only when there is a problem or a specific need or question. These individuals are generally salaried or paid by the hour when they are full time employees, and are paid per instance when they are not.

Most small business database administrators will possess a bachelor's degree in this or a related field. They usually work alone, since the business is not large enough and does not often have enough money to hire on a full team of database administrators. As such, you should enjoy working alone and be capable of doing all database administration tasks on your own in order to succeed as this particular job. It is definitely not for everyone, but many swear by it.

Self-employed Database Administrators:

Some database administrators have ditched the traditional working environment completely and have instead decided that they will make their own schedules, their own rates, and their own salaries. They also tend to do their own marketing, which can be difficult initially, but becomes much easier once they have built a name for themselves in the community in which they work. These individuals may own their own business, or they may simply be freelancers or contract employees of a number of other businesses. This is the database administration job that lends itself to the most personal freedom.

You don't have to have any kind of formal training to strike out on your own and work as a database administrator. However, you do need to have the know how to successfully work in the field, and this usually only comes with education and/or experience. Furthermore, keep in mind that potential employers are often going to ask you about and even check up on your background and training, so having some schooling or at least experience is truly helpful and can play a large role in your success or failure as a self employed database administrator. Remember too that marketing is key!
