The truth of the matter is, however, that the field of technical writing is a very diverse field, and people come to it from a variety of different backgrounds and experience levels. With that said, however, there are certain qualities that can greatly improve your chances for success, and we will discuss them here.

1. Have an Education of Some Kind:  You don’t have to have a doctoral degree in Chemistry (though it certainly wouldn’t hurt!) in order to become a scientific technical writer. Likewise, you don’t have to have any specific education to succeed in any aspect of technical writing, but you should have some kind of education. Whether you go for a degree, at any level, in the content area you are interested in, or you set your sights on a technical and/or professional writing degree or certificate doesn’t matter, as long as you have some kind of formal schooling or training to show for yourself.

2. Know How to Write:  Like a fish that can’t swim, there is nothing worse than a prospective technical writer who can’t actually write. While you don’t have to be a whiz, you should, at the very least, know the most basic conventions of grammar and spelling. You also need to learn about the specific formatting and style required for your particular job and subject area. If you don’t possess basic writing skills just yet, try brushing up on your knowledge with a remedial English or grammar class. These can be taken for next to nothing as a non- degree seeking student at a college or university.

3. BeTechnologically Savvy:  These days, there are a lot of different computer and technical programs that you need to know inside and out to do your job. While some of these skills will certainly only come with experience and real work in the field, you should be doing all you can now to learn about the various technical programs and necessary knowledge involved in your line of technical writing work. The more you know, the greater your chances of being hired, and the less annoying training you will have to go through.

4. Know Your Content Area:  Hands down, the most important thing you can do to have success as a technical writer is to know your content area inside and out. While we can’t all have master’s degrees in the subject we are interested in writing about, we can all work on keeping up to date on the latest happenings and news in the field and to continuing our own educations whenever possible. The more you know and the harder you are willing to work, the more valuable you are to potential and current employers.
